Dear Conference Participants,

As the conference approaches, please take a few minutes to read the following reminders and instructions that you will also find as an attachment if you want to print them out.

• Getting to the campus and finding the registration desk:

Tram tickets are available from the vending machines on each platform. You can use cash or credit card. I advise you to buy a "tickarte 10 trajets" (12.70 euros). If you prefer buying individual tickets, a single ticket will cost you 1.50 euro. These tickets are also valid on buses. You must validate (stamp) your ticket when getting on the bus or tram. You can take as many trams or buses as you like in the space of one hour for the same price.

Please take a look at the map on the conference site under the heading "Conference Venue" (scroll down to get to the campus map) to locate the university and read the transportation information that you will find there.

Get off Tram B (heading towards Pessac) at Montaigne-Montesquieu. The Université Bordeaux Montaigne is on your left when you arrive at the bus stop. Cross the tracks and the square and enter the main building ("Adm" on the campus map) where you will find the registration desk. This desk will be just up the stairs leading up to the Amphi 700.

There will be a table in the main hall (Hall Central) for SSAWW attendees to put out hard copy materials of cfps, etc.

You will be given a Wifi code on arrival. This code will allow you to have access to the Internet on the university premises.

• Don't miss the opening of the conference!

The opening address will be made by Mr. Dan Hall, Consul of the United States of America and by Mr. Frédéric Boutoulle, Vice President for Research at the Université Bordeaux Montaigne. This will be immediately followed by Alice Kaplan's inaugural conference on Susan Sontag. As for the many other unmissable events on the conference program, we hope that many of you will be there on this occasion.

• Here are a few notes about the panels and presentations:

For panels with 4 or 5 papers, we are asking presenters to keep their papers to no more than 15-16 minutes to ensure that there is time for discussion at the panel’s end. It takes about 2 minutes to read a double-spaced page. We deliberately placed panels with 5 presenters late afternoon to allow you to have a bit more time for presentation and discussion if need be but panelists still need to keep within a 15-16 minute time frame.

Presenters in the 2 or 3 person panels can take a bit longer if they wish. Your chair will give you specific instructions ahead of time.

We are asking chairs to enforce the time allotments politely but firmly to ensure that all presenters have the same amount of time before the discussion.

Since we only have 10 minutes between sessions, please try to vacate the session rooms in an orderly manner at the end of the session so that the next panel can come in. Conversations can continue over a coffee in the Hall Central.

• Attending one of the events on Wednesday 4-6:

There are two parallel events, the staged reading of a play by Susan Glaspell and the screening of Nancy Kates's documentary on Susan Sontag. We ask all people interested in one or the other to be in the Hall Central no later than 3:50 on Wednesday so you can follow one of our guides to the Odéon, the DEFLE (for Sontag) or the Maison des Etudiants (for Glaspell). Please note that the staged reading will be followed by a small sangria reception offered by the Susan Glaspell Society in the Maison des Etudiants.

• Reception at the Institut Culturel Bernard Magrez:

The reception starts at 8 p.m. and you can stay till 11:30. We would like everybody to arrive between 8:00 and 8:30. You will need to take a bus that should take you there in about 15 to 20 minutes. I have attached specific directions from the center of Bordeaux (from the Place Gambetta and from the Quinconces, which are easy to find wherever you are in Bordeaux). Please read them carefully and take them with you on Friday night.

You will have the opportunity to view the current exhibition at the ICBM and guides will be there to give you information about the works on display.

• Day trips on Saturday:

If you have registered for one of the day trips on Saturday, please make sure you are at the Tourist Office in Bordeaux (12 cours du 30 juillet) no later than 8:45 a.m. since the buses will be leaving at 9:00 a.m.
